Desert Party (2006 b by Street Cry x Sage Cat, by Tabasco Cat)

Darley at Jonabell $10,000

A very powerful horse with less of his sire’s scope and overall look than some of the other sons that have gone to stud in Kentucky. Desert Party was a very fast 2yo in training prospect and sold for $2.1 million at the Fasig-Tipton February sale. Initially trained and raced in the US, Desert Party was precocious and fast, winning the G2 Sanford at Saratoga.

Sent to race in Dubai at 3, Desert Party won the UAE Guineas, then ran second to Regal Ransom in the UAE Derby. Those were the highlights of the rest of his career on the racetrack, although the horse won six of 10 starts, with a second.

Physically, he is much more of a Storm Cat (maternal great-grandsire) than anything, but he definitely showed speed and had some class. The horse is offset through the right knee, which is not uncommon for the Storm Cat stock. And even as a horse freshly out of training, Desert Party has a big girth upward of 80 inches. It’s that Storm Cat blockiness.

There is also good length, impressive development and strength through the hindquarter, and some potential at the price.
