unbridled's song at tm2

Sometimes even a dead horse gets a break.

The late Unbridled’s Song, whose death in 2013 was a significant loss felt by both breeders and buyers at the yearling sales, had a pair of first-time graded stakes winners on Feb. 13, and the big gray was offering a sort of Valentine’s note to breeders that speed and ability will prevail as the two lightly raced but clearly talented athletes came home first.

In the Grade 3 UAE 2,000 Guineas at Meydan, the 3-year-old colt Market Rally drew off from his hapless competition by 6 lengths, running the 1,600 meters in 1:38.08. The Archipenko (by Kingmambo) colt Lazzam was second by 7 lengths, and the way that the first two drew off from the rest at least offers a flattering light on the winner.

Bred in Kentucky by Ashview Farm LLC, Colts Neck Stables LLC & Unbridled’s Song Syndicate, Market Rally is the third foal from the stakes-placed Mr. Greeley mare Boodles. Winner in three of her four starts and stakes-placed in the other, Boodles has produced two stakes winners from her only two foals to race.

The mare’s first stakes winner is the Hard Spun colt Watchyourownbobber, the winner of a minor stakes at Gulfstream Park West (nee Calder) but also second in the G3 Jefferson Cup at Churchill. The chestnut colt was a $25,000 yearling at 2013 Keeneland September who progressed well enough to resell for $62,000 at the OBS April sale the following year.

The same year, Market Rally went through the Keeneland September sale, selling for $210,000 to Ben Glass, agent, and races for Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid al Maktoum.

The mare has a yearling colt by Sky Mesa. Boodles was a good race filly who has turned around the recent fortunes of this family, which had gone quiet for a generation. A step farther back, Market Rally’s third dam produced Canadian champion A Fleets Dancer (Afleet), and fourth dam Tete de Linotte (Turn-to) was a half-sister to Canadian champion Rouletabille (Nearctic) and produced Canadian champ Bessarabian (Vice Regent).

On the other side of the globe, the year-older Tara’s Tango won her first graded race in her ninth start, the G2 Santa Maria Stakes at Santa Anita. The stakes was the filly’s third victory, but it comes after Tara’s Tango had already logged a second and a third in G2 company. The 4-year-old beat the 6-year-old Medaglia d’Oro mare Yahilwa by a half-length, and Tara’s Tango now has earnings of $318,004.

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet and raced by Stonestreet Stables, Tara’s Tango adds her upwardly mobile credentials to a pedigree that already was very robust. She is a half-sister to G1 winner Visionaire (Grand Slam) and to G3 winner Scarlet Strike (Smart Strike). Visionaire won the G1 King’s Bishop at Saratoga the same season he won the G3 Gotham earlier in the year at Aqueduct. Scarlet Strike won the G3 Providencia Stakes at Santa Anita, was second in the G1 Chandelier, and was third in the G1 Hollywood Starlet.

This trio of graded stakes winners is out of the stakes-placed Scarlet Tango (French Deputy), who is a half-sister to a pair of stakes winners herself. Stonestreet acquired Scarlet Tango for $850,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November sale while in foal to Grand Slam, carrying a full sibling to Visionaire the same year that colt won his G1.

The mare’s second foal for Stonestreet was Scarlet Strike, whom Stonestreet bought back at the 2011 Keeneland September sale for $70,000. The filly was then sent through the OBS March sale, where she sold for $220,000.

After proving her mettle on the racecourse with 10 stakes placings to go with her stakes victory, Scarlet Strike was sent through the ring at the 2014 Keeneland November sale, where Al Shaqab bought her for $1.3 million out of the Taylor Made consignment, which was agent for the partnership of Carver, Hollendorfer, and Smith.

Tara’s Tango is the dam’s third foal for Stonestreet, and Scarlet Tango has a 3-year-old Malibu Moon filly named Tangere, a 2-year-old colt by Street Cry (Ire), and a yearling colt by Tapit. She is currently in foal to Speightstown.

Both these new graded winners, Market Rally and Tara’s Tango, appear to have bright futures and remind us what an important source of athletic ability Unbridled’s Song was and will continue to be.
