There aren’t many Nijinsky mares left in production, and those who are make up a fine minority. One of their chief ornaments to the breed is Munnaya, a stakes-winning daughter of the English Triple Crown winner and the dam of five stakes horses to date.

The great son of Northern Dancer died 20 years ago, and Munnaya was one of the last foals by the great son of the great sire of stallions. Few stallions get a single top-class son, but Northern Dancer produced at least a half-dozen that anyone would qualify for that adjective. And several of those produced sons to carry on a further generation.

While not so notable as Northern Dancer as a sire of stallions with enduring influence, Nijinsky has long been evident as one of the great broodmare sires. In fact, he’s better in that regard than his much-lauded sire.

One of the obvious reasons for the son’s advantage is that Nijinsky was a much different type than Northern Dancer, taller and longer and heavier of bone and body. Nijinsky took a great deal after the Teddy-line sires that produced his dam, Canadian champion Flaming Page (by Bull Page, by Bull Lea, by Teddy).

Those big, roomy daughters with quality and class made tremendous broodmares in every racing jurisdiction around the world, and America is favored to have had its fair share. One of those who spent most of her time in Kentucky was Munnaya, as part of the Gainsborough Farm broodmare band, which was amalgamated into the Darley mares when Gainsborough was dissolved.

The record for Munnaya is below:
