For those of us who like racing class in the dam, Lottsa Talc has lots to offer. The winner of 21 races from 65 starts in six seasons of racing, the daughter of Talc earned a smidge more than $1.2 million. Most owner-breeders would be elated to find such results from the entirety of the racing stable, not just a single hickory mare.

Furthermore, Lottsa Talc had class in balance with her courage and quickness, winning twice at the G2 level, once at G3, while also placing in five more G2s and a final G3. These, in addition to her multiple listed and restricted stakes efforts, show that Lottsa Talc was a mare with plenty of athletic ability who knew where to find the finish line.

But that is what Lottsa Talc offered on the racetrack, and she followed that up to make a serious mark when presented for sale as a broodmare in 1997 as a 7-year-old carrying her first foal to a cover by Unbridled’s Song. The hammer price was $575,000 from Jacks or Better Farm in Florida, and they foaled a dark bay colt out of their new mare who was named Lottsa Luck but had none, dying as a yearling.

The owners kept taking Lottsa Talc to Kentucky stallions the next two years, getting winners by Wild Again and Tabasco Cat, before running upon barren or empty years in three of the next four seasons. The only live foal in that run came from the little-credited Slew Gin Fizz (actually a better stallion in South American than in the North).

Conventional wisdom for a mare such as this, who possesses a serious race record but a less glittering pedigree, is that her family caught up with her. But realistically, what can one expect? If every stallion who didn’t get a stakes winner from his first half-dozen foals was a failure, essentially all would carry that label.

Fortunately, Lottsa Talc kept on, and when lightning struck, the mare was 19, and she was covered by home stallion Awesome of Course, a stakes winner by Awesome Again now best known as the sire of champion Awesome Feather. At the time that Fort Loudon was conceived, however, Awesome Feather was only a foal at the side of her dam.

The grand old mare, now 22, has one daughter carrying the banner, as 12-year-old Sexy Stockings (Tabasco Cat) already has produced a stakes winner. The mare’s only other surviving daughter to date is her Consolidator yearling Concord Park.
