The best racer yet sired by the self-promoting Awesome Again stallion Awesome of Course, Awesome Feather won the G1 Gazelle at Aqueduct on Saturday. A winner at the highest level now at 2 and 3, Awesome Feather descends from a lovely old Whitney family.

Aside from the details below, the filly’s third dam is champion Quill (by Princequillo). She was one of four stakes winners from the Count Fleet mare Quick Touch. The latter was a pure goldmine as a producer. Her first foal was SW Sorceress (by Slide Rule), winner of the Polly Drummond, second in the Adirondack, third in the Frizette; 2nd foal was stakes-placed Viscount (Case Ace); third foal was SW Capelet (Bolero), who won the Frizette; fourth was champion Quill; fifth was SW Count Amber (Ambiorix), winner of the Narragansett Special, second in the Travers, third in the Gotham.

Following her sixth foal, the winner Noble Touch (Crafty Admiral), Quick Touch had only four more live foals the remaining 14 years of her life and produced her last, the unraced Nashua colt Grand Encore, when she was 26. What a mare!

If her produce record isn’t astonishing enough, Quick Touch is by one of the greatest Triple Crown winners and is out of Alms, a half-sister to Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner Twenty Grand. The second-best foal out of her dam, Alms ( by St Brideaux) won the Pimlico Oaks but produced only four foals, none of great consequence. Perhaps for this reason, Greentree Stable dropped the under-performing Quick Touch into claiming races, and Reginald Webster claimed a blue hen broodmare for $5,000 (not a ham sandwich in 1949).

Quill produced three stakes winners, her daughter Last Feather produced a pair, and Awesome Feather is the current star of the family.
