Giant Ryan, winner of the G1 Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont on Saturday, descends from the distinguished female family that produced Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Bold Forbes, among other stars of the turf.
Giant Ryan is by Freud, a full brother to the highly important sire Giant’s Causeway, and is in Argentina covering mares at La Legenda in a dual-hemisphere arrangement. A winner from two of three starts as a 2yo, Giant Ryan did not win in brief (two starts and one) campaigns at 3 and 4. But this racehorse has come roaring back at 5, winning six of his eight starts.
With each victory, Giant Ryan stepped up the class ladder, from state-bred allowance to open, to state-bred and listed stakes to G2 and now G1 stakes victories. It is quite a tale of development, maturity, and success at last.
The Vosburgh winner represents a similar tale for his dam, who had only moderate success from her earlier foals, which include stakes-placed Sentiero Rosso and the useful winner Psychotic Reaction, who earned more than $100k in a career that suggests some ruggedness along with ability.
Their dam, the winning Dayjur mare Kheyrah, was bred in Kentucky by Shadwell Farm from one of its extravagantly pedigreed matrons, Khwlah. This mare is a Best Turn half-sister to English highweight Dunbeath and other good horses. On the turf, Khwlah was twice placed in black-type events, once in Italy and once in Germany.
If Khwlah fell short of her illustrious siblings, so too did her own offspring move closer to the breed average.
They did not, in short, succeed out of turn.
But as the last foal of his dam, Giant Ryan is taking the family back to the rarefied atmosphere of those star members of the third and fourth generations like Dunbeath and Bold Forbes.
