The produce record of Bethany, dam of Metropolitan Handicap winner Tizway, is a study in contrasts. Always well intended and apparently highly regarded as both a racing and producing prospect from her hammer prices as a yearling and as a broodmare, Bethany did not have any early success.

I mean any.

Unraced. Her first five (5) years at stud yielded exactly three foals, one winner of one race.

By that point, many breeders would have shot the mare … or themselves.

Then Bethany produced a pair of stakes winners back to back, listed stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Ticket to Seattle (by Capote) and Tizway (see below):

What can we make of that?

For one thing, Ticket to Seattle and Tizway both brought very respectable prices as racing prospects. That indicates they were nicely conformed, athletic, and much better than average.

Both are by big horses, and there is more than a small suggestion from the pedigree that Bethany needed some size or scope to produce a racer with the right stuff. If that inference is correct, then the mare’s last two foals, both by big stallions in Elusive Quality and Tiznow (again), should have better than average results as racehorses.

It will be interesting to watch.
