The first winner for G2 sprinter Bwana Charlie came April 10 at Keeneland when his daughter Malawi sped 4 1/2 furlongs around the track’s 2-year-old course in :52.
The good-bodied filly was favored in the race and started well, was briefly headed by second choice Princess Andrea, then began pulling away from her competition.
Having set fractions of :22.16 and :45.74 over Keeneland’s Polytrack, Malawi began drifting out strongly through the stretch but continued on to win the maiden by four lengths in :52.03.
Bred in Florida by Heiligbrodt Racing Stables, who also owned and bred yesterday’s juvenile winner at Keeneland (Heavenville), Malawi is the fifth foal out of her dam, the stakes-winning mare Malady, by Gilded Time.
Malady won the Santa Teresa Handicap and earned $133,904. She is already the dam of stakes winner Dancin Olivia (by Forestry).
